This collection documents Georgia Representative Reid Harris' involvement in the creation of the Coastal Marshland Protection Act of 1970. Harris served as head of the environmental section of Governor Jimmy Carter's Goals for Georgia program and later as chairman of the governor's State Environmental Council. The files include scrapbooks, publications, press releases, clippings, correspondence, photographs, and draft legislation.

Frederick C. Marland is a retired professor from the University of Georgia Marine Science Institute located in Sapelo Island, Georgia. He worked closely with Reid Harris and other Georgia legislators to write the technical portions of the Coastal Marshlands Protection Act of 1970, and later the Shore Act of 1979. These papers consist of his collected ecological research, material on marine development, promotional information about coastal areas, and a large collection of annotated maps.

The Charles H. Wharton collection is comprised primarily of Dr. Wharton's investigations of bottomland forests and wetlands and the effects of stream channelization. He studied many river systems in the Southeastern United States including the Alcovy, a tributary of the Ocmulgee, the Altamaha, the Chattahoochee, the Flint, the Nantahala, the Savannah, and the Tallulah. Swamps which benefitted from his research and advocacy include the Atchafalaya in Louisiana and the Congaree in South Carolina. He is best known for his pioneering work The Natural Environments of Georgia.

The Georgia Environmental Oral History Project was started in 2013 via a partnership between the Russell Library and Betsy Bean. The project documents the forces that have shaped and are currently shaping the Georgia landscape, including such topics as environmental activism (with a focus on grassroots activism), legislation related to environmental issues, the environmental history of the Georgia coast, the interplay between conservation, industry, and tourism, the politics of "sustainability," and the relationship between environmental issues and public safety. Early interviews focus on Brunswick and Glynn County including numerous Superfund sites, the development issues surrounding St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island, and the challenges of protecting coastal marshlands.
